Phallusϋberalles is the second album from Welsh industrial project Immune System, following their debut Weltanschauung. Immune System is a pretty obscure project, and I don’t have a lot of information to hand, but I do know they’ve been booted off MySpace a couple of times, which is generally a sign of someone doing something pretty interesting. This is industrial metal constructed to the specifications laid out in the late 80s / early 90s blueprint of such groups as Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Foetus, Pigface etc. I used to listen to shitloads of this kind of music, but I’ve been sort of neglecting it in recent years, and I’d forgotten how much fun it is. Not very deep, maybe, but like they used to say, it’s got a beat and you can dance to it. Fortunately, Immune System have appointed themselves keepers of the holy flame. Guitars, sirens, massive beats, Joy Division samples, funky basslines and lashings of fucked-up noise. ‘Necronomoron’ features guest vocals from Zephyrael, a.k.a DJ Zeph, and the Slit Wrist remix of this song is one of the album’s highlights. ‘The Bornless One’ has lyrics borrowed from W.B. Yeats and Aleister Crowley, and I'm not sure which one would be more horrified to see the company he’s keeping. The final track, ‘Posttard’, is a monstrously noisy two-minute workout, followed by several minutes of silence and a cheesy Satanic ritual. I'm listening to this alone in a deserted house at 2.30 in the afternoon, and it just makes me want to be out getting drunk in a dingy club surrounded by rubber-clad fetish sluts at 2.30 in the morning! I bet Immune System would be good to see live, and in fact they’re on tour at the moment, so this may not be an impossible dream. In the meantime, pick up Phallusϋberalles and relive your misspent youth. Or if you happen to still be young, pick up this album and learn to misspend your youth properly. Go on, get off the internet and go out dancing, you saddo! http://www.myspace.com/immunesystem
