Revere is the first release for New Zealand duo, Jason Just and Kane Davey. The release features themes of death, rebirth, divinity and the long-standing plight of the common man. They’re themes that all neofolk and martial fans are familiar with, and the duo succeeds in invoking a strong and visceral reaction to them by incorporating dark ambient and atmospheric elements. Highlights of the EP include, “Remeant,” “Sinecure Saccade,” as well as the EP’s industrial offering, “Eiton Euclarion.” The latter is a dark and driving romp through territory previously ruled over by acts like Ministry. It’s a nice touch for the album and the duo does well with the style. Several tracks are reminiscent of now-defunct Boston goth project, One of Us. Strong and raw, Kane’s vocals and naked, driving rhythms provide the comparison, while atmospheric elements help keep the sound from sounding like a direct rip-off. My guess is that they’ve never even heard of their Boston brethren to confirm or refute the comparison. This reviewer, for one, is looking forward to their next release, a 12" vinyl featuring Michel of Disjecta Membra as guest vocalist. With such a strong initial release, the band should find success and a fan base outside of New Zealand. www.distorture.co.nz
